For the 25th anniversary of the MSP/NRP Deep Creek Dunk, we wanted to put together a historical timeline showcasing all of the amazing dunkers and supporters of Special Olympics Maryland - Garrett County. As we enter our 25th year, it serves as a reminder of the power of community and the incredible impact that can be achieved when individuals come together to support a worthy cause. February 1999

The First MSP/NRP Deep Creek Dunk

The inaugural MSP/NRP Deep Creek Dunk takes place, with hundreds of individuals braving the icy waters of Deep Creek Lake at Honi Honi and Uno’s Pizzeria to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics Maryland - Garrett County.

The Deep Creek Dunk has reached its 4th year, but another Special Olympics Maryland event in Garrett County reached an even more impressive milestone. With 2002 being the 20th anniversary of the Special Olympics Maryland Winter Games competition at Wisp Resort. Athletes from all across Maryland compete in this state tournament including Special Olympics Maryland winter sports including Alpine Skiing and Snowshoe.

The 8th Dunk event had over 500 participants and raised over $120,000 not only showcasing the resilience and camaraderie of the community but also raising record breaking funds and awareness for the incredible athletes of Special Olympics Maryland –Garrett County. It was a day where the thrill of the MSP/NRP Deep Creek Dunk was surpassed only by the warmth of compassion and unity of everyone who attended. The 2005 Special Olympics Maryland Winter Games was declared open by a procession of the “Flame of Hope” down the mountain at Wisp Resort.

This year the Dunk raised about $160,000 with the official dunker turnout of 799, with an additional 1,000 or more spectators coming out to watch from dry land.

The Dunk has become a can’t miss event with people coming out to watch because it’s such an amazing spectacle. This 12th year marks an iconic shift towards themed Dunking Teams with a majority of dunkers turning up in costume. The dunk has become an all-day event, complete with lunch for dunkers courtesy of the Uno Chicago Grill and an after-dunk party at Black Bear Tavern. It’s a great day of fun and excitement and great energy, but at the end of the day, you’re enduring this moment of cold for a lifetime of opportunities for Special Olympics athletes in Garrett County.

We celebrated Dunk Bears 21st birthday in style, adding another Dunk to Dunk Maryland weekend! In 2019 we held the first ever Cool Schools Dunk on the Friday before the Deep Creek Dunk. Northern and Southern High and Middle Schools came out in force, raising money for their Unified® sports programming. Proving that Garrett County Public Schools are committed to the growth and development of interactive inclusive school programming. ALL students should feel like there is a place for them within their own learning environment. Unified Champion Schools help to provide opportunities for students of all ages and abilities to experience inclusion at their own school through programs such as Unified Sports/Activities, Inclusive Youth Leadership, and Whole School Engagement.

The Dunk is BACK! After a two year hiatus the Deep Creek and Cool Schools Dunk came back in droves all to support Special Olympics Maryland - Garrett County community and school programming. That wasn’t the only Special Olympics Maryland event back in Garrett County, with our annual Winter Games returning to Wisp Resorts for competition. The community of Garrett County made it feel like the Dunk and Winter Games never left. We want to thank everyone who came out to support the 2023 Dunk and Winter Games and remind us how important a dedicated community can be!
